Pulse Track

Pulse Track is an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that allows you to easily take and record your heart rate. Pulse Track can be used to record your heart rate along with notes and activity type associated with your heart rate. Please refer to the following guide on how to use the features in this application. If you have any issues you may contact us.

Taking your pulse

The app launches into the screen for taking your pulse. To take a heart rate reading, simply use one hand to take your pulse and use the other hand to tap the rhythm of your heartbeat. A good place to locate a strong pulse is by using two fingers at the side of the neck, directly below the jaw (carotid artery). For an illustration, touch the info icon on main screen, then touch the 'Find your pulse' button.

Hold the iPhone in one hand and tap anywhere on the screen with your thumb (or any finger most comfortable) in time to the rhythm of your heartbeat. When you feel your heartbeat, touch and release your finger on the screen. When you stop tapping, your heart rate in Beats Per Minute (BPM) will appear after a short delay. You must tap at least twice in order for the app to produce a reading, however five or more taps is recommended. The BPM accuracy increases the longer you spend tapping your heartbeat.

The delay setting on the info screen indicates the amount of time the app waits to display the BPM on the screen. When you stop tapping for more than 2 seconds (the default delay), the app detects the end of your tapping, calculates the BPM, and displays the result. Increasing the delay allows the app to measure heart rates lower than 30 BPM (maximum delay of 4 seconds).

Saving your heart rate

After you obtain a heart rate from the app, you may save it using the 'Save' button. The app automatically fills in the date and time of when you took your pulse and the resulting BPM. You can pick an activity to indicate the circumstances under which you took the pulse. There is also a Notes field for you to enter a detailed description containing additional information. Both the activity and the notes are optional for saving your pulse result. The data you entered can be viewed and edited at a later time.

The activity list defaults to five activities that you can choose from, including 'Walking', 'Jogging', 'Running', 'Aerobics', and 'At rest'. You can pick an activity from the list to associate with the BPM record, or select 'Add Activity' to add a new activity if your activity is not listed. You can also delete any activity by swiping your finger across the entry on the list and touching the delete confirmation button. NOTE: Deleting an activity from the list does NOT affect any pulse history record that has already been saved with that activity name.

You may also explicitly edit the activity list by touching the 'Edit' button. When the activity list is in edit mode, you can touch the activity name to edit the description for that activity. Also, you can delete activities from the list using the deletion control on the left. Activities are listed in the order that they are created. To help you organize your activity list, perhaps to group the most frequently used activities at the top, you can use the reorder control on the right to move the activities to the desired order. Once you are done editing, hit the 'Done' button to exit edit mode.

History of your heart rate

Once you save your heart rate entry, it goes into the Pulse History. Pulse History is accessible from the main application screen. The history lists all your saved heart rates, ordered by the most recent entry first. To remove unwanted entries from the list, simply swipe the entry and then press the delete button. You may also touch the 'Edit' button to put the list in edit mode then choose the history records that you wish to delete and confirm your changes. To remove all history records, touch the trash can icon at the bottom and confirm deletion of all records.

You can view and edit the Pulse History detail by selecting it from the list. When you are finished viewing Pulse History records, touch the 'Cancel' button to go back to the main application screen.
